Dr. Vaughn is an internationally recognized authority on Andean archaeology, ceramic analysis, preindustrial mining, village and household archaeology, and archaeometry.

Vaughn has served since 2015 as associate dean of academic affairs for UCLA Extension, the largest continuing education program in California with 90,000 annual enrollments, 170 certificate programs, 5,000 courses, and 2,000 instructors. During his tenure at UCLA, Vaughn led new program development, expanded online curriculum development and delivery, and worked on increasing philanthropic support for Extension. He concurrently held an appointment as adjunct professor of anthropology.

Before coming to UCLA, Vaughn spent a decade at Purdue University, where he was a tenured associate professor, serving as director of undergraduate studies and as a member of the Provost’s committee on research integrity. At Purdue, Vaughn pioneered distance learning coursework in anthropology and participated in a Sloan Consortium workshop on distance learning.

“The opportunity to increase UCR Extension’s impact on the region is compelling,” Vaughn said. “Continuing education developed in partnership with UCR schools and colleges that can be delivered across a wide range of platforms and modalities will leverage the full value a comprehensive research university can bring to a growing region like the Inland Empire.”

Vaughn is an accomplished scholar who has published and presented extensively on his research on the emergence of sociopolitical complexity and political economies of middle-range societies. As a researcher, he has successfully competed for multiple grants and fellowships from federal agencies and other public entities and private foundations. He earned Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees in anthropology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington.

UCR Extension provides professional certification, degree pathway coursework, and international academic exchange programs as UC Riverside’s continuing education arm. The organization is an active partner with communities across Riverside and San Bernardino counties and provides high-quality, market-responsive instruction that drives economic development and extends the reach of UCR throughout Southern California.
